Who am I?

Hello! I’m Joshua Gardner, painfully human, passionate about plain English and accessible language. I’ve spent years working across communications, marketing and customer-facing roles and in education, translating technical or formal language into something people actually want to read. I have worked with charities, schools, small businesses and big organisations on creative projects. I write for anyone who values plain English, good design and a bit of personality.

I wanted to do something I love and that’s why I started secret cupboard comms.

If you need words that explain, persuade, or just make sense of something complicated, I can help. I write clear, plain English and human content for well... humans. I write to help people and organisations get their messages across. Big or small it all matters to me!

What do I do?

• Website and blog writing - engaging, readable content that feels like you.
• Newsletters and email campaigns – clear, friendly updates that people actually open and click to find out more.
• Content editing and proofing – tightening up what you’ve already written so it shines.
• Internal communications – intranet updates, policy explainers, staff campaigns, policy simplification.
• Ghostwriting – blogs, letters, or social posts that sound like you (just on a good day).
• Videos - lets make some videos. A Tiktok or something for Youtube.

How it works

You tell me what you need, an article, a newsletter, a refresh of your website. I’ll go away sit and muse and ponder and I’ll come back with a simple quote and timeline.

I charge fairly and transparently (usually per project rather than per hour) and I’m happy to start with something small to see if I'm a good fit.

I work remotely from my secret cupboard in South Wales, but I’ve written for people and organisations all over the UK. Everything’s done via email or Zoom unless you happen to be local and fancy a chat over coffee.
